Biography
Jules Baillarger (March 25, 1809 – December 31, 1890) was a French neurologist and psychiatrist born in Montbazon, France. He studied medicine at the University of Paris and worked at the Charenton mental institution. In 1840, he became the director of a maison de santé in Ivry-sur-Seine.
Achievements
Baillarger was a pioneer in neuroanatomy, discovering that the cerebral cortex is divided into six layers. His name is associated with the inner and outer bands of Baillarger, which are important in sensory cortical areas. He also described a psychiatric disorder involving both manic and depressive episodes, known as folie à double forme.
Fun facts
Baillarger founded the Annales médico-psychologiques with Jacques-Joseph Moreau and others, influencing modern psychiatry. Despite his discovery regarding folie à double forme, another psychiatrist, Jean-Pierre Falret, had described a similar condition before him, albeit with significant differences.
