Biography

Abigail May Alcott Nieriker (1840-1879) was an American artist and the youngest sister of Louisa May Alcott. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and was the inspiration for the character Amy in 'Little Women'.

Achievements

Alcott studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and in Europe, where she exhibited her work. She was recognized for her skill as a copyist of J.M.W. Turner, and her still life was the only painting by an American woman exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1877.

Fun facts

Despite the negative critical reception of her early illustrations for 'Little Women', Alcott became an accomplished artist. Her marriage to Ernest Nieriker in 1878 was considered happy by her sister Louisa, despite the age difference.
