Jean-Delphin Alard (March 8, 1815 – February 22, 1888) was a French violinist, composer, and teacher. Born in Bayonne, he studied under F. A. Habeneck at the Paris Conservatoire, where he became a professor in 1843. Alard was a representative of the modern French school of violin playing and composed several works for the instrument.
Achievements
Alard had a significant impact on French music, being the author of an Ecole du violon adopted by the Conservatoire. His works include nocturnes, duets, and studies, as well as a 40-part edition of compositions by 18th-century masters, Les Maitres classiques du violon. He also taught Pablo de Sarasate.
