Robert McCormick Adams Jr. (July 23, 1926 – January 27, 2018) was an American anthropologist and secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1984–94). He worked in both the Near East and Mesoamerica, and was a long-time professor at the University of Chicago, best known for his research in Iraq.
Achievements
Adams served as the ninth secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, where he promoted diversity and modernization of infrastructure. During his tenure, he oversaw the acquisition of the National Museum of the American Indian and the establishment of the International Center for cultural research. He received several awards, including the Gold Medal Award for archaeological achievement in 2002.
