Biography

Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta was a Mexican American attorney, author, and activist, born on April 8, 1935, in El Paso, Texas. He was prominent in the Chicano Movement and wrote semi-autobiographical novels such as 'Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo' and 'The Revolt of the Cockroach People'. He disappeared in May 1974 during a trip to Mexico and is presumed dead.

Acosta was a notable defender of Chicano rights and worked as an antipoverty attorney in Oakland. In 1970, he ran for sheriff of Los Angeles County, receiving over 100,000 votes. His literary works addressed the struggles of marginalized peoples, and his friendship with Hunter S. Thompson made him an iconic figure in gonzo literature.

Fun facts

Acosta was described as a '300-pound Samoan attorney' in Thompson's novel 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', which generated tensions between them. His disappearance in Mexico left many questions, and his son suggests he may have been a victim of violent conflict. Thompson took years to write an obituary for Acosta, reflecting the complexity of their relationship.
