Biography
Giorgio Abetti (October 5, 1882 – August 24, 1982) was an Italian solar astronomer, son of astronomer Antonio Abetti. He was educated at the Universities of Padua and Rome and worked at the Collegio Romano observatory. Abetti served as director of the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri from 1921 to 1957.
Achievements
Abetti led expeditions to observe solar eclipses in Siberia and Sudan, was a professor at the University of Florence, and served as vice president of the International Astronomical Union. He received several awards, including the Medaglia d'argento and the Prix Jules Janssen, and has a crater and an asteroid named in his honor.
